One question I've been asked frequently this past month is what do I need to have ready for the first weeks of school? ⁠

And one thing I've learned is that having the right tools for the job is critical in getting a classroom set up fast and as easy as possible (let's face it, it's never really easy). A really great way to have students practice fluency drills is to pair them off. Have one be the timer and the other run through the word list and then trade off. Have them track how many words were read. Students who are able to do this can even graph their own data to see their progress.⁠

I was talking about this in training the other day for paraprofessionals in a district about behavior support. It's so true. This is the reason sometimes we teach students to ask for a break--⁠

YES! we teach them to Get. Out. Of. Work. So we can teach them to work without having problems. Short-term compromises for long-term gains.⁠
