Description

Make teaching life skills easy and fun with these interactive books for functional reading! This set includes 12 interactive books for special education students to address reading comprehension of 100 food sight words for students working towards functional reading IEP goals. Students will love the interactivity of these books when they match pictures and words.

These interactive books for functional reading use photographs that have teens and adults to represent individuals close to the readers in age. They are written at the second grade level to allow students who have emerging reading skills to use them. Your special education students will be engaged while learning life skills related to food, restaurants, groceries and more!

Included in this functional reading IEP goals set:

  • 12 interactive books incorporating 100 food words
  • All the books use photographs of the food items
  • The books are designed to be interactive to demonstrate reading comprehension — students find the word to match the picture on the page.
  • To allow easier differentiation among students in the classroom, the books include pictures (without words) for students to simply match the pictures to the page.
  • Choice board visuals to fit into the morning meeting starter kit book or storyboards if you are using them.
  • 2 Extension Page options: one has matching pictures and the other is a blank page with no pictures so you can rearrange them.
  • Suggested functional reading IEP goals
  • Extension Activities

These interactive books are great tools for direct instruction, practicing reading in independent work, and engaging students with functional materials in group time. Your students will LOVE filling in the missing words in the sentences using the laminated pieces or a dry erase marker during direct instruction. Or they can match the pictures to the page to complete the sentences.

The books are PERFECT for special education activities in your classroom. They can be used to help build context for using environmental print. They help the students learn to use these words in connected text and how they are encountered in the environment (e.g., in a recipe, on a menu). You could also use them to answer comprehension questions like who, what, where questions from the information in the text to work further on comprehension skills.

❤️These functional reading books are designed to help students in special education classrooms, who are often reading significantly below grade level, to read books and to enjoy reading books about characters like them.  It helps them to build functional literacy and to build their confidence as readers.
